Write a Book Review

Did you love the book you just read?  Did you think the book was a waste of time?  Want to share your opinion with the rest of the students?

Now that you have finished reading your book .....
Write a paragraph or more explaining exactly what you thought of it. You do not need to give a summary of the plot. Instead, consider these points:
 THE ILLUSTRATIONS
THE STORY
TO WHOM WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS? WHY?
DOES THIS BOOK DESERVE TO BE CONSIDERED A "WINNER" OR A "LOSER"?  EXPLAIN WHY.
BE VERY HONEST
Make sure to include the author's name and title.
Submit your review through the OPALS library catalog.

Consider these points when writing your review:
  • PLOT:  plan of action; holds story together; how the story is arranged.  Does it have problem/rising action/conflict/climax/falling action/conclusion?
  • SETTING:  Past, present, future.  Is it vital to the story or just an unimportant backdrop?
  • CHARACTERIZATION:  What types of protagonists and antagonists?  How presented?  Do they change or remain unchanged?
  • POINT OF VIEW:  How does the reader learn what happens?  Is the story told in first person, third person?
  • THEME:  Author's purpose in writing the story.  What are the lessons to be learned about life from this story?
  • STYLE:  What makes the writing memorable?  Full of vivid detail?  How is the story arranged - chronological, flashbacks, episodic?
  • FORMAT:  Shape, size, design of the book
  • ILLUSTRATIONS:  How do they complement/extend the text?
  • COMPARISONS:  With other books of same topic, theme, genre, style, author, etc.
